Book Recommendation: The Road

A few months ago I read a phenomenal book by Cormac McCarthy. The Road is set in a post-apocalyptic horror of a future USA. With the earth environmentally devastated and unable to produce crops, society has become devoid of any system of laws or civility, humanity has sunk to depravity, chaos, anarchy and cannibalism. The book tells the tale of a man (simply referred to as 'the man') and his son as they try to make their way through this nightmare landscape to the coast following vague hopes of a better future. With some graphic descriptions and disturbing images, this novel is not for the faint of heart. McCarthy's somber yet engaging prose paints a bleak vision of a possible future. As the story unfolds the author makes sharp observations about the nature of mankind, our frailties, our goodness and our darkness. Read this book! It's reminiscent of Lord of the Flies only more insightful in light of our modern era.
I am not one to obsess over a book and RARELY do I find a book that I cannot put down, this fit the bill on both counts. The evening I read it, I could not bring myself to stop staying up till 3AM to finish. That's about as high a recommendation I can give for any book.
